First you need to know yourself. Then only you can know the external world. It is only through a very personal experience of inner discovery that you can know yourself and find ultimate peace of mind.

Habit, confinement, revelation and limitlessness

The morning that dawns upon us everyday does no longer bring the same joy and pleasure it used to bring when we were young. Its arrival everyday has gone into our habit. Habit makes even the most beautiful things monotonous and distasteful. Habit itself stays in closed compartments and makes us live the same way. It confines us within a known circle. But we cannot do away with all our habits and become indisciplined.

When we go to visit a new place we actually try to break our daily habits to see this very same world in a new light. The veil of monotony gets removed, and then we get immense pleasure.

One who is dearest to me, habit can never make him/her monotonous. A part of him/her always remains beyond my perceptions, and there always remains something more in store for me, something more to know. That is why our dearest ones keep on giving us so much pleasure and happiness. A sense of limitlessness is always there. There always remains something more to look forward to. That only gives us real joy.

Whenever we try to confine something within limits, by our habits, customs and usages, it ceases to give us joy and happiness. That is why we open our doors and windows at times to get peace of mind. It is peace that brings happiness. But as regards ourselves, we must very clearly be aware of our own limits. We must never try to surpass them. Whereas regarding other things, we must not try to confine them within limits, particularly when something is trying to manifest itself, with all its colours, most naturally.

Again, it is revelation that gives us happiness. The more we reveal ourselves, the more our true nature gets manifested, and the more freedom we get. The ability to accept everything that comes before us makes us free. But our nature gets manifested only up to an extent it has been designed to. Again I say, we must never be led to go beyond that extent by our desire for fame, honour, riches or power.

All things that have grown old renews their existence once more only through love. When we think about someone we love dearly, everything that was old, torn and tattered yesterday, becomes new and pleasant. It is love, care and affection that makes us see the unbelievable from among our normal beliefs. We can feel the limitlessness; we can get peace and happiness. That is why, looking at the vast expanse of the sky or an ocean gives us peace.

Everyday we keep on exchanging our love, care and concern for one another, which gives our very existence an ultimate shape or form. This way we keep on setting one another free, slowly and gradually.

Based on Bengali works by Rabindranath Tagore
